The argan tree with its broad, shade-providing treetop is one of the oldest trees of the world. Today, argan can only be found in southwestern Morocco, where its forests are designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Together with our Moroccan trade partner, we support the cultivation and reforestation of argans. Not only do the trees prevent a further desertification, they also provide a secure income for the local women. The women of an indigenous ethnic group known as Berbers crack open the hard nuts by hand, according to tradition. The two to three oil-rich seeds are then gently cold pressed. It takes approximately 35 kilograms of fruit to receive one liter of argan oil, that is why it is among the world’s most expensive oils.

In Europe, argan oil is much appreciated as a gourmet oil for modern haute cuisine and put on a par with caviar and truffle. The mild nutty oil gives an authentically oriental flavor to salads, vegetables, and desserts.

Argan oil consists of over 80% unsaturated fatty acids, mainly oleic and linoleic acid. It is rich in natural antioxidants, which are rather rare in other vegetable oils.
